Galaxy Fold gets update that makes its 6 cameras a lot more powerful

With a $1,980 price tag and six cameras, you'd think that Samsung's foldable Galaxy Fold would be at the forefront of smartphone photography, but the truth is that it's actually lagging behind Galaxy S10 and Note 10 in terms of camera features.

Well, not any more. SamMobile reports that the Fold is getting several cool new camera features in a new update, including Night Mode for selfies, Live focus video mode, AR Doodle and Super Steady recording in Hyperlapse mode. There's also a new video editor, allowing users to add captions to their videos as well as stitch several clips together.

It's unclear at this point whether the upgrade also brings other features such as Hyperlapse selfie mode and Night mode for the telephoto camera, but the S10 got all of these in a similar update, so it's possible that the Fold got them as well.

These are actually all features that the Note 10 and the S10 already have, but it's still a big deal for Fold owners. Originally, the Fold was scheduled to launch in April 2019 (it eventually launched in September after several delays) and its camera software wasn't updated from its original state until now.

The upgrade was first rolled in France and the UAE, SamMobile says, but a wider rollout will likely follow soon.

The Samsung Galaxy Fold is Samsung's most expensive and, in many ways, most powerful phone. Its six camera array — three on the back, one on the front and two on the inside — is the most versatile camera system you can get on a smartphone, though ultimately it performs similarly to the cameras on the Galaxy S10 (which isn't bad at all).
